Improve Electrical Safety in your property

An electric shock occurs when a person comes into contact with an electrical energy source

Electrical energy flows through a portion of the body causing a shock.

Exposure to electrical energy may result in no injury or, may result in major damage or even death.

Here are some facts you need to know:

·Low voltage electricity (less than 500 volts) does not normally cause significant injury to humans.

·Exposure to high voltage electricity (greater than 500 volts) has the potential to result in serious damage/death

·If you are going to help someone who has sustained a high voltage shock. You need to be very careful that you don’t become a second victim.

·Children are prone to shock by low voltages found in typical household currents (110-220)

·Burns are usually most severe at the points of contact with the source on the ground( hands, heals & head)

·Other injuries from shock are possible if a person has been thrown clear of the source by forceful muscular contraction (spine injuries and internal injuries)

·Hand or foot pain/deformity may indicate a possible broken bone.

·In children, a burnt lip may be the result of biting an electrical cord

Tips on how to improve electrical safety in your property:

·Make visual checks to your electrics with professional help

·Take extreme care with DIY

·Remain vigilant in the kitchen

·Remember that water & electricity are a deadly mix

·Don’t use electrical gardening equipment outdoors until it is dry

·Take necessary precautions after a flood and exercise caution to prevent electrical fires

·Install a fire extinguisher in the kitchen with instructions on how to use it

·Keep an emergency ladder on the upper floors of your home

·Make sure smoke alarms on every level of the property and have tested regularly
